Final Totals – Spring for a Meal Food Drive

April 5th, 2010

Our main web page is www.PenniesCanChange.com if you would like to learn more about our organization or would like to make a donation.

First off, I would like to thank everyone who donated during our first annual “Spring for a Meal” food drive. We selected 4 organizations to help with these donations. Our MA selection was in response to a donor from MA hanging flyers for us. The GA, ME and AZ selections were made because these 3 states are in the bottom percentage of the USDA’s food security report and we have donors in each state. The final total donated is……

$804.45 FINAL TOTAL for the “Spring for an Easter Meal” food drive of which $601.45 in online donations and $203.00 in mail in donations. Each of the 4 food banks will receive $200.00. 3 of the 4 will use this money to purchase food from larger food distributing food banks at an average of 17 cents a pound meaning our donations will purchase over 3,500 lbs of food!!! The other food bank requested $25.00 supermarket gift cards. The following is a little note about each of the 4 donations, how each organization was chosen and a brief description of each of the four facilities that received our donations.

Our MA donation went to The Hanson Senior Center in Hanson, MA. We selected this organization because one of our donors, Dave’s Dogs, who lives in Hanson asked to hang flyers from his place of business and around the town. The Hanson Senior Center will receive $200.00 worth of $25.00 supermarket gift cards. They service over 50 families in Hanson with food security assistance. They never turn anyone away, provide fuel assistance and do Meals on Wheels everyday.

The second donation went to the Oxford Hills Food Pantry in Sumner, ME. They will receive a $200.00 check that they will use to buy food from a large food distributing food bank near their facility. This food pantry was brought to our attention by a friend of our Facebook page who lives in the area. The Oxford Hills Food Pantry services over 2,500 people a year with groceries.

Our third donation went to The Griffin Food Pantry in Griffin, GA. This organization will use their $200.00 check in a very similar manner as the Maine food pantry by purchasing food from a larger food area food bank. They only pay 17 cents a pound for food and when purchasing it in this manner. The Griffin Food Pantry was established in the early 1980’s and services over 850 families a month.

Our last donation went to the Paradise Valley Emergency Food Bank in Phoenix, AZ. The PVEFB will, also, be sent a $200.00 check. This facility was brought to our attention by a donor who lives in the Phoenix area. In 2009 they assisted 10,850 individuals from 4,100 families of which 4,200 were children. They have over 70 volunteers from all walks of life and 100% of the money goes to meeting their mission.

Overall I was very pleased with how our first food drive went and learned some valuable lessons. I look forward to our next effort which will be beginning in mid April and run through Memorial day in May. It will be a six week effort to assist families of soldiers who have given their lives for our country and families of soldiers who are currently deployed but having a hard time with food security.

Again thank you to everyone who was involved with our “Spring for a Meal” food drive. We look forward to working with you again during the years to come.

Mike

Thinking With My Penny – 2

March 11th, 2010

We invite you to visit our main website is www.PenniesCanChange.com to learn more about our efforts.

One of the main reasons we started Pennies Can Change is we believe that giving should start at home. Today I’m writing about an uplifting story that I probably have an unusual take on at the end of the post.

I saw a story on one of the Sunday morning news programs a week or so ago that got me thinking about why I started Pennies Can Change. The story was about a family in Georgia who sold their 2 million dollar home and donated half of the proceeds to charity. It all started when the daughter was in the car with her dad at an overpass. She saw  homeless man on the side of the street standing next to a Mercedes that was waiting for the light. She said to her dad “If the guy in the Mercedes sold it and drove a lessser value car the homeless guy could have a van, an apartment or a meal” (it depends on the story you read), not a direct quote but that’s was the main thought. When the family spoke about the experience at dinner that night the mother asked how much would each family member would be willing to give up to help others. Thus the decision to sell the home and move into a smaller less expensive house. They took the money, $800,000 profit from selling the home, and donated it to two villages in Ghana.

While the overall concept is noble and who am I to tell people where to donate their money? My main question is what did they do to solve the problem that initiated their actions? You remember, the homeless man under the bridge! What was done for him? Does he have a van or a meal or a place to stay now? The answer is NO. From the story, the family thought about how to spend this $800,000 for a year. What, they couldn’t find a solution that would help someone in the United States, too?

I know that most of our families have origins in other countries but we are now living in the US. I don’t know why this bothers me so much but it does. I feel I’m pretty intelligent and know that there are situations all over the world where people need assistance. I’m not saying to turn a blind eye toward them. I am saying before you donate to a cause outside of the US you should think about some of the struggles that people are having in your country. For as long as I can remember seeing the commercials with Sally Struthers, I remember thinking “What about the children in the US that need help?”. Why don’t I see commercials for feeding our kids or familes that are hungry? Well, that’s why I’ve decided to stop thinking about it and do something about it! Pennies Can Change is my attempt at solving something that has bothered me for years. If you’ve made it this far in my rant, thank you and don’t forget to visit our website www.PenniesCanChange.com to learn more about our efforts.

Thinking With My Penny – 1

January 22nd, 2010

Do you ever just sit and wonder about something and how it could change your life? Could be winning the lottery, a big news story, your kids, your parents…anything. I think most people have these kind daydreams from time to time. They think about how things could be different for them and how their lives could change for the better. I know I do.

However, lately I’ve been thinking more about how can I change other peoples lives and how will that affect me. Today I’m sitting at my kitchen table staring out the window and feeling a little sorry for myself. Yet, yesterday I donated over $100.00 of food to food pantry in my county. This place was a warehouse and had bins 6 foot square and 4 feet high. There must have been over 100 of these bins and almost all of them filled with food. You know the stuff –  cans of veggies, soup, tuna, beef stew, mac and cheese – we’ve all dropped a can into a box on the way out of the store once in our lives. I was walking around the food bank with a volunteer who was telling me how much food they went through over the holidays and that all the food I saw will be gone by the end of March. They will be very low on food from March until their next major food drive in August. So, I’m thinking what the heck am I whining about I have food, warmth, family and friends. I’m doing pretty damn good and should start enjoying the simple things more.

What happens from April thru July? Do the people who need the food bank just disappear? I don’t really know what happens to these people. But you know what, I’m already starting to think about them. I’m wondering will I be one of them? Will I be able to help them? I can tell you what I won’t do and that is I won’t be able to stop thinking about them. I have begun a journey that will not allow me to turn back. An adventure that I believe will never end.

With this site and this blog I will make good things happen. I hope as you read this you can feel my passion and join my movement. It is a worthwhile cause. I want to feed the hungry in our great country. I understand that there are great tragedies and that people are suffering around the world everyday. I understand that most of us have roots in other countries. However, I truly believe we need to take care of ourselves first and foremost. There are people suffering in our own land everyday, too.

Do you ever think about others who do not have what you already have? Do you ever think about not be able to eat one meal a day never mind three? I know I do.

Gift for week of January 18, 2010

January 19th, 2010

The gift for this week was donated to Food Bank Network of Somerset in Bridgewater, NJ. The donation was in the form of $100.00 worth of 10 for $10.00 sale items from a local grocery store. Bottom line is that they received 100 items from Pennies Can Change and all items were items identified by the food bank as items in need during a call prior to delivery.

This establishment was well organized and people were extremely nice. We received a tour of the facility and exposed to of some daily activities of the volunteers. Jan and I thought this operations was one of best we have visited to date and will be back in the future.

Gift for the week of January 11,2009

January 15th, 2010

This week’s PenniesCanChange.com donations went out to 2 families, one in Florida and one in Massachusetts, brought to our attention by a donor and a friend. They will receive $50.00 supermarket gift cards. One family is battling kidney cancer. He is a firefighter and while being treated for his cancer his house burnt to the ground on New Years Eve, destroying all his worldly belongings. The other family is fighting to keep it’s head above water after the main money maker has undergone a liver transplant.  During the recovery process his hours have been cut back at work. They don’t know if he will ever be able to return to full capacity but need some assistance as they work on their options.

I prefer to work directly with famlies that are brought to our attention through donors, as long as I have a way to verify the situation.

As I continue on this journey, I want you and your network of freinds and family to come along for the ride. Please send your suggestions to me at admin@penniescanchange.com.

As always we can only move forward with your contributions. Keep them coming.

Mike

Gift for Week of January 4th,2010

January 7th, 2010

Janet and I just donated 10 winter coats with hats, gloves and scarfs to Ozanam Family Shelter in Edison, NJ.  While the majority of our efforts are geared toward feeding the hungry in the US. However, with the extreme cold blanketing the most of the country we decided to use some of the movement’s donations toward warmth this month.  We were very impressed with the people we met at the shelter today and with their operation.

If you would like to join the movement visit www.PenniesCanChange.com and as always if you have an idea for us feel free to send an email to admin@penniescanchange.com.

What Happened in December?

January 5th, 2010

I used December as a watch and learn month. While presenting the idea to friends and family, I used their feed back and ideas in deciding to not use most of the donations during December. Instead I made a few donations of my own to other charities to view their donation process. Learning how they set up their online donations,  thank people after making a donation, and follow up during the months after the donation is made.

The general feedback I received was that I might have been moving a little too quickly and that the majority of charities were putting of the full court press during December. The main suggestion I recieved was that I should use the December money and the money donated during January and February to help replenish the food banks I’m looking to assist.

So there it is, let the new year begin.

Go to http://www.PenniesCanChange.com to join the movement.
